How to determine your skin tone is one of the top questions I get asked. Here are my 5 top tips.

1. The Gold or Silver Jewellery Test

Find a couple of pieces of old jewellery; one gold and one silver. Ideally these need to be big enough to see them clearly; delicate, fine chains won’t work well. Lay the two pieces of jewellery across your arm and observe how they look on your skin. Which one blends in with your skin and which one stands out or contrasts to your skin tone. The one that blends will be the one that suits your skin tone the best.

If the GOLD jewellery works well then you are likely to have a WARM skin tone.

If the SILVER jewellery works best then you are likely to have a COOL skin tone.

If you think that both the Silver and the Gold work well then you may have a NEUTRAL skin tone.

2. Check Out Your Veins

If I’m honest this is often pretty difficult to identify but always fun to have a go! Take a look at the veins on the inside of your wrists, where your watch fastens. Most people can see a number of veins in this spot. Ideally I would suggest doing this outside in natural daylight.

If your veins look GREEN then your are likely to have a WARM skin tone. If your veins look BLUE then you are likely to be COOL.

3. The Colour Test - Pink and Orange

A really good test you can do at home is to find two pieces of clothing, it doesn’t matter what they are, but one should be orange and one a strong fuchsia pink.

Then seperately hold the two pieces of clothing up to your chin (in front of a mirror) and observe the reaction of your face/skin to the two different colours.

If the ORANGE item looks the best i.e. it tones in with your skin, then you are likely to be WARM. Likewise if the FUCHSIA looks great then you are likely to be COOL.

4. How Do You React To The Sun?

Another little observation you can make, which can suggest if your skin tone is warm or cool, is to see how your skin reacts to the sun. If you just look at a little bit of sunshine and you immediately tan and have a lovely golden glow about you then you are likely to be WARM. In contrast, if you find it impossible to tan and your skin burns very easily then you are more likely to be COOL.

5. Blush or Bronzer?

One of the questions I always ask my clients before I analyse their colours is to describe their makeup routine! I am specifically listening for what they put on their cheeks – blush or bronzer? Many ladies say to me ‘I don’t own a bronzer, it looks really odd on me’ or ‘I don’t really bother with blush I just tend to use a bit of bronzer’. More often than not the lady who is a fan of Blush is cool. She will use a little pink on her cheeks and feel great. The lady who prefers bronzer tends to have a warm skin tone.

Are These Perfect Ways To Determine Skin Tone?

Absolutely not!

These are simple little tests to give you an idea of your skin tone. Many women do not even consider what skin tone they have or even consider it important to know. I can tell you it is vital to know. Only by identifying your skin tone will you truly be able to understand which colours – in makeup, clothing and even your hair colour, will make you look and feel fabulous!

The only way you can be totally certain of knowing this is to ask an expert, like myself, and have your colours analysed. In my opinion, and in my experience, it is a life changing experience which will simplify shopping, creating outfits and simply getting dressed every morning!
